Our animal hospital is equipped with a new modern in-house laboratory that allows our veterinarians to quickly perform many of the diagnostic tests to achieve an accurate and rapid diagnosis in our patients. This is especially important in very ill animals and those requiring immediate or emergency treatment. Some more specialised tests may need to be performed by an external veterinary laboratory.
Laboratory evaluation of blood, fluids or body tissues allows us to identify existing disease in our patients. Common laboratory tests include blood chemistries, complete blood counts, blood clotting times, urinalysis, faecal tests, biopsy examination, cultures and infectious disease testing.
We commonly provide in-house cytology on our patients. This involves viewing under our state-of-the-art microscope cells from a patient. This may include swabs from infected ears, skin scrapings for mites or fine-needle-aspirates of samples from lumps and bumps. These results can be ready as quickly as several minutes - while you wait - or if taking a little longer we will call you with results.
Our in-house laboratory can provide results within hours. Specialised testing may take 12-24 hours for blood results or up to 14 days for biopsy results, depending on the nature of the test being performed. Ask your veterinarian when to call for your pet’s laboratory results.
